Jer's Vision is proud to invite you to our 6th annual Jer's Vision/Day of Pink Gala.

Held at the incredible Tabaret Hall, at the University of Ottawa (75 Laurier Av. E.) at 6:30pm, the event will celebrate the work of Jer's Vision working in schools and youth communities to stop bullying, homophobia, transphobia, and discrimination of all kinds.

In addition to incredible appetizers, and performances by some of Canada's most talented musical artists, the event will also confer the Youth Role Model of The Year Award to Brian Burke (Toronto Maple Leafs), for his work in addressing homophobia in sports; Stephen Lewis, for his work in speaking out against HIV/AIDS stigma; and The Kingdome of the Netherlands, in celebration of being the first country to legalize same-sex marriage ten years ago.

The event will be hosted by Martha Chaves, and feature: Emmanuel Oletho, the Canterbury Chamber Choie, and many more surprises.

Working together

This Winter, Jer's Vision has had the chance to numerous LGBTQ* Youth Service Providers all over Canada.

As a result, one thing that we discovered was that organizations felt a need to better organize and work together, with a national perspective. The idea that consistently came up was a national conference where service providers could talk about best practices, sharing resources, collaborating (both locally and nationally), speaking out against hate (with one voice), and working together on a national level.

Jer's Vision would like to know what you think about this idea. The conference is proposed to happen on Monday, July 25, 2011 in Vancouver (the day before the Vancouver 2011 Outgames Human Rights Conference).

Following the recent suicides of Tyler Clementi, Raymond Chase, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg, Asher Brown, Billy Lucas and others whose story was untold, we have created a toolkit for your school or community organization to organize a Purple Day on Oct 20th, 2010.

Youth internationally have named October 20th, 2010 Purple Day, a day to remember those who were lost this past Sept 2010, and before. Our toolkit makes it easier for you organize your Purple Day. The kit includes 3 posters (1. to raise awareness about Purple Day, 2. to highlight Resources Available; and 2. 'We Remember' poster, to commemorate those lost); as well as ideas & instructions for activities.

Sisters in Spirit

As the bells in the Peace Tower struck noon, a sombre hush fell over the large crowd gathered at Parliament Hill Monday. Everyone's eyes were on the stairs as a woman stepped down to the mic and asked us to make a path down the middle. A group of about 25 people began to walk slowly from the Eternal Flame, each one holding an enlarged picture of a woman or girl who had been murdered or is missing. As they took their places on the steps, the crowd was silent, the only sound coming from the drums that 3 men and a woman were sitting around, beating. Then their voices joined in as they sang a prayer to the Creator. Then an Algonquin elder took the stage, praying for the dead and missing Aboriginal girls and women, inviting us to pray with her,

The event was a sombre one, but there was an undertone of hope, because although there are more than 582 missing or murdered Aboriginal females in this country, the Sisters in Spirit initiative have been working hard to get police involved and work hard to find these girls.

This year 37 communities in 8 provinces held a vigil on October 4th in honour of this cause.

Jer's Vision is looking for volunteers to mentor youth in schools! Come on board as a mentor for youth in Diversity & Rainbow Alliance clubs, Workshop facilitator or Conference organizer.

We are always looking for people to also help out with offices duties, like creating new resources, networking with school and community partners, organizing events, fundraising, and supporting the organization.

In September, a number of LGBTQ teen suicides made international media turn theirs heads and wake up to this very real and disturbing reality for queer youth.
On behalf of Jer's Vision, our board, volunteers and staff, we would like to express our most sincere condolences to the friends and family of Tyler Clementi, Raymond Chase, Seth Walsh , Justin Aaberg, Asher Brown, Billy Lucas and to others whose story was untold.
As an organization that works to end bullying, discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia in schools and youth communities, these events serve as a reminder to the importance of the work that we do, and ongoing need of being proactive at creating positive and safe spaces for youth.

Anne Fleming, author and creative writing teacher, and CBC radio host and critically acclaimed writer, Bill Richardson, will judge the 2010 first person narrative essay contest. Once again we are asking novice and veteran writers—and everyone in between—to submit 2000-2500 words on the theme, Where I Come From. Submissions are due no later than November 1 and, in addition to four cash prizes, including a prize for Best Under Nineteen, all entries will be considered for publication in Keeping Our Stories Alive, Volume I, A Journal of the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives. Dear Jer’s Vision,

My 17 year-old, Grade 12, daughter just came home from school and spoke admiringly of Jeremy and his presentation at Dartmouth High School this afternoon. You made a great impression on my daughter, who...didn’t actually need any enlightenment at to the reality of discrimination. I hope the ears that really needed to hear his message heard it...and will start thinking about their attitudes AND their actions.

I am just writing to say thank-you for spreading your important message and for having both the vulnerability, but more so, the strength to share your story. My daughter and I are impressed by your choice to use settlement funds to start this organization. I am saddened to know that this type of despicable behavior is still happening in our schools but heartened to know that your organization is working to be the change in our troubled world.

Take Back The Night!

Take Back The Night Lanark County is here! Thursday night at 6:30 pm people will gather behind the Carleton Place Town Hall and join the march through town to Read's Bookstore, rain or shine. After the march there will be a performance by the county's Spoken Word National Slam Team.

Take Back The Night is aiming to send a message that all girls and women deserve to be safe and not feel terrified of assault and violence whenever the sun goes down. So if you're in the neighbourhood and see a parade of purple-clad men, children but mostly women making a whole lot of noise, don't be scared - join in!

Visionary of The Week: Catalina

Catalina worked for Jer’s Vision during the summer as a Co-op student. She did various things to help out like making hand- made thank you cards and panting portraits of people who have done amazing things including David Suzuki, Alex Munter, Jane Rule, Ken Coolen, and Stephen Lewis. These portraits will be on display with twelve other paintings at the Elgin Street Bridge Head from August 16th to 31st. Catalina is also helping out with the International Day of Pink. She says one of the coolest things she’s done is a 30 hour famine with her school.

She says that one of the most impactful things she does is right in her own community. When she was younger she would see elderly people selling poppies door to door in the cold. Since that day Catalina has volunteered at the legion selling poppies every November. “The elderly are so gracious and happy for my help, it’s a great feeling.” She explains. The funds from the poppies go towards care facilities and medical research. Catalina thinks that it’s an amazing feeling to help out in your community.

I think that this project is great because it applauds people who have done great things. It also tells the stories of different people, opening people’s eyes to diversity. She explains how it feels to help someone: “The feeling you obtain when you help someone is great, it’s like nothing else. When you do the tiniest thing it has a huge impact on that person’s day even if it’s just saying hello or returning a dropped item” .

Visionary of The Week: Marianne Bolton

Marianne Bolton is a young adult who devotes her time to help make the world a better place. Recently she has started to work voluntarily at Jer’s Vision. “I wasn’t required to work with Jer’s Vision, but I do because it stands for what I believe in”. This isn’t the only thing Marianne has recently done. She regularly donates her time, giving a helping hand to many different organizations that deal with worldly issues, including helping with the earthquake in Haiti. Her newest project is helping with the International Day of Pink.

Marianne explains that she has had many impactful things happen to her but that one of the greatest was something small but very true. When she was volunteering at an art camp called Arc-enciel (Rainbow) a young girl ran up her and noticed that she was dressed in black clothing. “You don’t look much like a rainbow” said the Curious and confused girl. Marianne smiled then responded as if the girl asked a question, “Trust me. I’m full of rainbows”. The girl then held Marianne’s hand smiling back up at her. “This might not mean anything to someone else but to me it meant a lot” explained Marianne.

Whenever Marianne hears about things like war, discrimination and racism she remembers two famous quotes that have stuck with her for a long time. The first one being a quote by Ghandi "You must never lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty." And Marianne’s favourite: "Be the change you wish to see in the world". She says:“If you want something enough, you can make anything happen. By helping one person, you can help a thousand. It's never too late to make a change.” This is the easiest way to make a difference and the message she would like to portray.

Visionary of The Week: Melanie

Melanie is a 24 year old student studying to get her major in psychology. She found Jer’s Vision a year ago when looking for an organization to volunteer with. She wanted to join an organization that dealt with important issues and that hosted informative workshops. Before joining Jer’s Vision Melanie had been involved in pride and same sex marriage rallies in Ireland. Right now Melanie is helping to organize an environmental conference. She is finding local speakers to talk about issues including sustainability, local foods and recycling. David Suzuki will also be speaking at the conference.

One of the biggest reasons Melanie is part of Jer’s Vision is because when she was in high school nobody talked about issues surrounding homosexuality. Melanie explains how hard it was “When I realized I was gay, it was really confusing. Growing up in a homophobic high school I felt isolated, no one ever talked about what being gay was. This made me want to be able to give the resources and knowledge to kids in high school so they don’t have to experience what I did.” She wants to share this knowledge to all teens so they can understand that everyone is equal. She says she enjoys hearing kid’s questions, because it shows that they are interested. Her biggest advice about getting involved is to simply start a club in your school or with friends that address bullying, discrimination and anything that you’re passionate about.

Congratulations Argentina

Jer's Vision would like to congratulate Argentina for being the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage. Thank you to the 33 law makers who voted towards legalizing same-sex marriage along with President Christina Fernandez who is a strong supporter of the change.Argentina has given the gay and lesbian community every right that heterosexual couples have,including adoption and inheritance.

Since the law was passed Thursday, July 15th nine gay couples have already said the famous words "I do". Rolando Jimenez a gay activist in Chile thinks the change in Argentina gives hope. He says "Argentina's political class has provided a lesson to the rest of Latin America". Following in Argentina's footsteps Paraguay will adress and present a proposal for a similar law in the months to come. We at Jer`s Vision would like to say good luck and congratulations to all 9 of the couples who recently got married in Argentina.

Paramedics dialogue

Jer's Vision trained new paramedics, at the Ottawa Paramedic Service, working in communications. The training dialogued about how participants could work to foster a healthy culture at work and work with diverse communities. Jer's Vision is also excited to be marching in the Ottawa Pride Parade with the Ottawa Paramedics Service. Come join us on Aug 29th, 2010.

The Gladstone a New Experience

The Gladstone is a newly opened theatre located in the heart of Little Italy on 910 Gladstone Avenue. The building itself is small but very quaint, the lobby is decorated with beautiful chandeliers and red curtains. The staff is very welcoming and helpful, which is a great quality adding to the atmosphere.

Although it's main focus is theatrical performance it spans farther than that, better describing it as an entertainment venue. Steve Martin, the owner of the Gladstone, describes the diverse range of genres. "We have plays ranging from comedies, tragedies, mysteries, musicals and even Shakespearean." Not only did the theatre host seven "spectacular" plays, but it has also been home to two live music concerts and many corporate events. Steve Martin explains that their selection covers the "basics". The Gladstone has reasonable prices, with individual seating variying in price from $20-$45. There are also subscription packages available. This is definitely something to look into if you're looking for a new experience.

Visionary of The Week: Adam Chenard

Adam Chenard is a 21 year old student attending Carleton University studying to become a high school teacher. Adam has been an active member of the Jer's Vision since August 2009. He joined the team after hearing an inspirational speech made by Jeremy that truely motivated him. Adam says he joined Jer's Vision as a way to help people going through the same issues he faced and to inspire youth to make a change.

Growing up in a very traditional town people werent very accepting of Adam being openly gay, because of this he was often bullied at school. He explains that he wants to help people going through the same situation he was. " I know people who are struggling with coming out and I want to help and be there for them, inspire them to be proud of who they are." His most cherished moment working with Jer's Vision was when he had the opportunity to give a presentation at his old high school. " I liked the response I recieved from the student body surrounding GLBTQ issues. Students actually came to me admitting that they were that bully." This was a very fulfilling moment for him. He hopes to continue making a difference and encourages other people to get involved and be proud.

After being named Youth Role Model of the Year by Jer's Vision, Elder Commanda wanted to share his vision. The proposed Asinabka National Indigenous Center on Victoria Island in Ottawa will support the healing of Indigenous People, the healing of relationships with others, and the healing of relationships with Mother Earth. The over 30 students from Arnprior District High, Lisgar Collegiate, Brookfeild High and De La Salle, checked out diversity in art at the National Gallery of Canada, explored the Ottawa market, attended a drag show, and did a photo shoot at Parliament Hill.

Cassie's week at Coop

My last week at coop has been a lot of fun, in and out of the office. I finished a project that entailed recording all the feedback from students that Jeremy did workshops for in Calgary. I noticed that all the comments were very positive. I learned that so many students were touched by Jeremy's speech on homophobia that they started outwardly making changes in their school by standing up to bullying and discrimination.

On friday Mirian, Courtney and I went to the National Art Bank of Canada and got a tour around the place. We saw some amazing artwork, all done by Canadian artists. A notable artist that I found truly captivating was Rick Leong, who painted a vivid mural of a tree that stretched out into a colourful backround. The Art Bank had an overall beautifull collection of art.
